Former Amherst superintendent takes new role in Westfield

Date: 10/6/2023

AMHERST — Former school Superintendent Michael Morris, who departed the district in August, has resurfaced as the director of human resources for Westfield Public Schools.

Morris, who left the district once on a leave of absence in May, later left permanently in a mutual agreement with the school district and the School Committees. He departed Amherst in the midst of a Title IX investigation that was initiated following allegations of improper treatment of LGBTQIA+ students by middle school staffers.

In the days following, Finance Director Douglas Slaughter assumed the role of interim superintendent, Assistant Superintendent Doreen Cunningham was placed and remains on administrative leave and several members of the Joint School Committee resigned their posts.

Morris, an Amherst resident who served seven years with the district prior to his separation, began his new position in Westfield on Oct 2.
In an introduction before the Westfield School Committee on that same day, Morris said he had received an incredibly warm welcome.

“[I’m] really happy to be here to support the staff, students and community in Westfield,” he said.

Back in Amherst, the basic details of the Title IX investigation have not been made public, the staff members remain on leave, Slaughter is once again interim superintendent and temporary School Committee members have been empaneled.
