AMHERST — Futura Coffee Roasters has officially planted itself in Western Massachusetts with the Dec. 9 ribbon cutting and grand opening of its Amherst location at 73 Cowls Rd. in the Mill District.
The enterprise, founded and based in Portland, Oregon where it has two locations, began its first East Coast venture with a soft opening on Nov.1 at the North Square.
Lead Barista Camden Mosher said their steady stream of clientele is made up of community members, local merchants and University of Massachusetts Amherst students looking to perk up at all times of the day.
Mosher said being next door to Carefree Cakery, which opened its doors in August makes for a nice combination.
“It helps us out a ton actually,” he said. “We love for people to come in and enjoy a cupcake next to a good cup of coffee.”
Futura’s official grand opening on Dec. 9 was very successful, Mosher said, noting that other North Square businesses like Provisions were helping to spread the word as they opened their doors to customers.
“We were able to fill up every table and even had a line out the door,” he said.
Marketing single regionals and blends, Futura supports regenerative agriculture from its growers and harvesting process and works with suppliers supporting their purpose. The business also makes use of compostable coffee bags for its retail sales.
“The big plus with Futura is our relationship with farmers and their ability to get compensated correctly compared to, say, larger chains,” he said.
Three percent of their daily sales is directed to Futura’s Soil Regeneration Fund, with half of those assets reinvested to further the adoption of regenerative agriculture principals through coffee producing field partners in Colombia with the remaining funds going to farmers and gardeners in Portland and throughout Oregon in support of their soil regeneration efforts.
Along with a wide variety of coffee choices, the Amherst and Portland locations offer sandwiches, bagels and other quick breakfast choices.
