AMHERST – “I came here to play,” declared Town Council President Lynn Griesemer before the official opening of the new playground at Kendrick Park.
She wasn’t alone as even before the playground officially opened, throngs of children were taking the opportunity to enjoy the new play structures. Griesemer and Town Manager Paul Bockelman lauded the many stakeholders that made the project, which took two years to design and build, possible after community outreach indicated that residents saw a need for a playground easily accessible to downtown residents.
Of the total $659,000 cost, $400,000 was provided by a Park and Recreational Facility Construction Act (PARC) Grant secured by the Planning Department, the maximum amount that can be awarded. Bockelman noted the Amherst Department of Public Works engineers designed the playground, integrating traditional playground apparatus with natural elements.
