AMHERST — A November public reopening for the North Amherst Library is now expected as the final steps for occupancy are taken for the renovation project at the historic location at 8 Montague Rd.
Construction for the nearly $2 million project began in August of 2022 with a planned fall 2023 reopening. The demolition of an adjacent abandoned service station is part of the renovation work to allow for parking facilities.
The library’s temporary location at 81 Cowls Rd. will remain in use and open to the public until Sept. 27, with staff members beginning the pack up and moving process the next day.
Library Director Sharon Sharry offered her appreciation for the temporary space while renovations were underway.
“Many thanks to the Mill District for being such great landlords!!!” Sharry wrote in a statement.
Sharry also said that some details of the return to the Montague Road location are changing as they await a certificate of occupancy.
With the departure from the temporary facility the interim period will consist of staff repopulating the library space with books and reference materials.
The more specific reopening date is expected in the near future.
