AMHERST - The annual Merry Maple tree lighting occurred on Dec. 2 on the Amherst Town Common. It was the first year of the historic Merry Maple tree being gone, as it was removed shortly prior to the ceremony; however, the town has historically alternated between lighting that tree and others in the common, so a different tree next to the old one was lit. Carolers from Amherst Regional Middle School sang on the Town Hall steps before the lighting ceremony. Horse-drawn carriages from Muddy Brook Farm strolled along the perimeter of the common delivering passengers to different checkpoints. The event saw a large turnout and attracted people from all over the community.
