Belchertown residents concerned about color of tap water

Date: 12/15/2022

BELCHERTOWN – Over the course of a few weeks, Belchertown residents have been posting on the Belchertown Community Forum sharing concerns about the shade of their tap water.

Superintendent of the Belchertown Water Department Kevin Williams told Reminder Publishing that “there is nothing to worry about.”

“The brown is strictly iron sediment and usually a tea color yellow. They can complain all they want online but if they want answers they should call here,” Williams said.

He added, “If they call, we can give them some answers.”

Williams added that he has only received a few calls over the past few weeks and said the problem could be from departments doing fire testing with the hydrants or road work.

“Usually, it is the Fire Department or DPW using the hydrant and kicking up some dust in the area that stirred up some water,” Williams said.

The fire chief explained, “The Fire Department has not used any hydrants recently, we try our best not to use them for this very reason. If we need to fill up a truck, we use the hydrant at the station with reducer and open it very slowly to prevent as much as we can.”

The DPW added that they have received no complaints of brown water in homes but to reach out to the Water Department if they do because “that is the best resource for that problem.”
