BELCHERTOWN – The School Committee approved a request to begin a search for a new athletic trainer at Belchertown High School.
Superintendent Brian Cameron told the School Committee at its Jan.17 meeting that the current contract with the athletic training company contracted with the district has doubled its rates and was no longer a viable option.
He met with the Personnel and Policy Subcommittee and constructed a job description with responsibilities and qualifications for the next athletic trainer.
Cameron said, “Currently we have a contract with an athletic training company for $45,000. Starting Feb. 15, they are going to be charging $90,000. A lot of schools are doing a self-assessment with their athletic departments and because of other companies out there and not much funding, a lot of districts are looking to hire their own athletic trainer.”
Cameron added, “This person would be on an individual contract with a salary of $50,700. It would not be your traditional come in at 8 a.m. and leave at 5 p.m. They would work flex hours and work directly with [Athletic Director] Mrs. Jennifer Gouvin.”
Belchertown High School Principal Christine Vigneux said that since she has been principal, Belchertown has done a great job of prioritizing student athletes health.
“Having an athletic trainer is important for our student athletes to make sure they are healthy physically and mentally,” Vigneux said. “With everything going on recently in the professional football world, it is extremely important to find someone who is qualified in case of an injury at practice or a game.”
Not only would the next athletic trainer work with the athletic director and coaches but Vigneux said it may be best if they also talk to Fire Chief John Ingram and Police Chief Kevin Pacunas to prepare for any potential emergencies.
“You are always proactive, but you can always be a little more reactive.” Vigneux added.
The School Committee, Vigneux and Gouvin agreed that the next athletic trainer needs to be certified and trained in areas like CPR.
Gouvin added that Belchertown has had an athletic trainer for the last 11 years and hopes she applies for the job and is strongly considered.
“She has an emotional connection with our student athletes. They look up to her and go to her. I think it be a good fit,” Gouvin added.
