Chubby’s in Belchertown looking for new ownership

Date: 12/6/2022

BELCHERTOWN – After being an owner for nine years, Chris Snow is putting Chubby’s up for sale at what he believes is the best time to do so.

The restaurant served burgers and ice cream but was eventually known for its Taco Tuesdays and Fish Fridays.

Chubby’s long history in town has also made it a popular household name.

“It has been a staple in town. It was one of the places to work or to hang out.” Snow said.

Snow believes that Chubby’s was established in the 1970s and remembers going to it as a kid.

According to Snow, Chubby’s started as an ice cream place that included food items.

When he bought it, he wanted to have a strong ice cream focus but also build the food options because “the town is very limited in a variety of food options.”

Snow was all about bringing his own creativity to the food items by focusing on burgers but also introducing sandwiches and wraps with a twist.

He brought in a smoke house where he had smokers in the back so that they could smoke their own bacon and pulled pork.

“It gave us some new variations that was missing from the town. People could recognize that we were doing as much as possible from scratch,” Snow added.

When Snow first bought Chubby’s, he said he created a five-year plan with a list of goals “to run a successful restaurant.”

“I wanted to re-establish Chubby’s as a safe place to work, a place for kids to learn how to work in a fast-paced environment, stay creative and re-establish Chubby’s as a community partner,” Snow said.
He said that Chubby’s did a lot with community events like sponsoring a youth baseball team, providing schools and businesses with treats during events.

Snow reminisced on his favorite parts of owning the business.

“Seeing the kids growing up. We served many kids when they were 6, 7 years old and over the years they have grown up and worked for me. Families would also come in and the kids would draw on the chalkboard while the parents could relax,” Snow added.

After nine years of success and the heart of the coronavirus pandemic dying down, Snow decided to finally put Chubby’s up for sale.

“Once I checked off all those boxes and exceeded the initial timeframe, I thought now was a good time to sell,” Snow said.

Snow is also the owner of two other businesses.

He built his own food truck called Rustic Fusion a year before the coronavirus pandemic and owns a self-storage business called Snow’s Self Storage.

He said that his other two businesses have taken off and juggling all three has become too big of a challenge.

Snow noted that Chubby’s is still thriving and doing well but wanted to sell when someone can take it over and be successful right away.

Chubby’s is seasonal restaurant that is open from the beginning of March to the middle of September and Snow wanted everyone to know that the restaurant is closed for the season and not because of the sale.

“I wanted to give the next owner plenty of time to be ready for next season which is usually March 1 but they could open whenever they want to. I chose to be a seasonal restaurant by choice.” Snow added.

The restaurant has been officially listed online for $150,000.
