EASTHAMPTON – The city of Easthampton announced Sept. 21 that they were awarded $400,000 for Nonotuck Park pool area upgrades.
The grant announced by the Baker-Polio administration is one of several amounting to over $12 million of Park and Open Space Projects (PARC) grants across the state.
The money Easthampton received will be used as part of a two-to-three-year plan where the city hopes to make crucial upgrades to the pool area. “The number one ticket item that we want to get done is the pool,” Parks and Recreation Director John Mason said during a July meeting.
During that meeting with the Parks and Recreation Commission in the summer, Mason said the total cost of these pool upgrades totaled $1.2 million. According to Mason, the $400,000 will be combined with Community Preservation Act (CPA) and city funds to potentially leverage other grant funds.
“The Nonotuck Pool is the centerpiece of the jewel that is Nonotuck Park,” Mason said in a statement. “The Nonotuck Pool project would not be possible without the overwhelming support of our Mayor, City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission, CPA Committee, State and Local Legislators, and most of all, the residents of Easthampton for continuing to support our department. We are looking forward to this process that will bring a pool that meets the needs and serves so many residents, parks guests, and the kids that attend Camp Nonotuck.”
The pool upgrades are part of a broader six-year effort by the city to improve certain aspects of the park – which Reminder Publishing reported on in July. The project will include the installation of a previous pool deck service, shade structures and umbrellas, fencing, ADA parking, an inclusive playground, an accessible path from the playground to bathrooms, bike racks, planting new trees and a demonstration rain garden with interpretive panels.
