EASTHAMPTON – With Thanksgiving approaching, the Easthampton Community Center is working hard to make sure that they have enough food to give out for families to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.
Executive Director Robin Bialecki said the center has nearly tripled in the number of people they serve through the food pantry.
So far the pantry has received 500 turkeys but Bialecki said that is not nearly enough because they feed over 2,000 families right now.
She shared that receiving donations at this time is hard because a lot of the people that used to donate are now coming to the pantry to pick up food for themselves.
“Luckily through the foundations, I have been able to write a number of grants and that has been a really huge help,” said Bialecki.
The center has had to get creative in terms of how they receive support. In previous years the center received donations through the Give ‘Em The Bird 5K and this year the race will be virtual. The money that the race raises gives a family in need a Thanksgiving meal.
Bialecki said the Thanksgiving bags will be distributed during pantry hours. The bags will include stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, potatoes, cake or brownie mix, canned vegetables and pumpkin.
The pantry is open on Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.
Anyone who wishes to donate can drop the items off at The Easthampton Community Center and anyone who would prefer to donate money instead can donate on the center’s website, easthamptoncommunitycenter.org.
