EASTHAMPTON — On Jan. 2, the city of Easthampton swore in its new elected officials for both City Council and School Committee.
Mayor Nicole LaChapelle opened the ceremony by thanking the newly elected officials for running.
“I just want to offer some comments about the end of last year and the excitement around both races for City Council and School Committee, and really want to appreciate the folks before us today and those who could not make it. Thank you for running, it’s not an easy decision,” she said.
LaChapelle also thanked the voters for turning out and supporting the candidates.
“This is the first time that we have had off-cycle elections and I want to thank the voters for coming out and voting, and being involved in these races,” LaChapelle said.
LaChapelle explained that the newly elected officials would be facing several challenges in the coming term.
“We have a challenging couple of years in front of us, we have a lot of work to do as we always do, but we have some real decisions governed and directed to us by the climate action plan and follow up un some work we’re doing with the School Committee and with the city finance to bring it together and make that information public in real time, but also allowing our [elected officials] to look at what’s happening and not have to request a written report,” LaChapelle said.
Following LaChapelle’s opening remarks, City Clerk Barbara LaBombard swore in the members of City Council and School Committee, beginning with those elected for the first time. Incumbents were photographed together.
LaBombard said that newly elected School Committee member Eric Guyette was unable to attend the ceremony as he is a teacher, and the ceremony took place during a school day.
