EASTHAMPTON – Two Easthampton staples are teaming up to save the week with a fun night out for the community.
On Aug. 5 at 6 p.m., The Black Labyrinth Tattoo Syndicate and Comics N More are joining forces to assemble a group art show of their favorite heroes and villains in the superhero realm. The event will be conducted at The Black Labyrinth on 46 Union St.
According to Josh Suchoza, an owner of the tattoo studio, this will be the first art show the tattoo studio is hosting since before the coronavirus pandemic.
“For this particular show, we just wanted to do something fun, and something a little lighter” said Suchoza. “I’m a huge comic book fan … I love books, comic movies, all of that. It’s a great escape from reality for me and for a lot of people. I wanted to put together an art show that celebrates that.”
Suchoza told Reminder Publishing that he is a massive fan of Comics N More on 64 Cottage St. and is also good friends with the owners. He said that collaborating with businesses in the community on events is something The Black Labyrinth likes to do often. “We had this idea, we talked to them about it, and they thought it was cool,” said Suchoza.
With both businesses on board, the tag team invited local and regional artists to pick some of their favorite superhero characters to create for an art show inside Black Labyrinth. Suchoza said that he is also participating by painting one of his favorite comic book characters, Fantastic Four’s Silver Surfer.
According to Suchoza, the show will also be in conjunction with Easthampton City Art Walk, which is the celebration of art exhibitions and creative performances around downtown Easthampton during the first Friday of every month.
The gallery at the Black Labyrinth is free and open to the public, so people are welcome to walk around and check everything out during the 6 to 9 p.m. time frame of Art Walk. Masks will be required for this specific event.
According to Suchoza, the invited artists participating may also have other art that people can check out and buy. In addition to the art shown on the walls, Comics N More are bringing a curated selection of comic books to go with each piece of art. The comic books will be for sale.
“We’ll have the artist’s interpretation of their [hero or villain] on the wall, and then the creator’s interpretation on paper,” said Suchoza.
The Black Labyrinth, which opened Aug. 1, 2017 under the ownership of Suchoza and his wife, will also be celebrating its five-year anniversary as a business during this art show event. “It’s been a whirlwind five years,” Suchoza said. “In that time, me and my wife had a baby, so we’ve just been growing our studio, growing our family, while also trying to be a part of the community as much as possible. It feels good to take a little time to celebrate that we’ve been here for five years.”
