Tourney to raise funds for pickleball courts in Easthampton

Date: 11/13/2023

EASTHAMPTON — The Easthampton Pickleball community will host a tournament on Nov. 18 to raise funds for two new courts at Nonotuck Park, but the day will also be a coming together of players and fans.

“We want to emphasize that this tournament isn’t just about pickleball; it’s about community spirit, promoting a healthy lifestyle and inclusivity,” said Barbara Cook, one of the event’s organizers. “In this crazy world, it’s nice to have a place where you can go to meet people and have fun, no matter your age, background or skill level.”

The community has shown great interest in the tournament, with two divisions already sold out and a total of 84 participants registered as of Nov. 9. Organizers expect to sell out the tournament with a total of 100 players.

“The popularity of pickleball in Easthampton mirrors the national trend,” noted Cook. “It’s a hit across all ages, particularly with our senior community. The current courts are bustling with activity, and the demand has led us to pursue this expansion.”

This tournament is just one of the fundraising efforts the team has put on to raise money for the two additional courts. An October Precision Paddle Pickleball Clinic had 37 participants and over a hundred individuals and businesses have donated to the cause.

“We are steadily advancing towards our target,” said Cook. “Thanks to recent fundraising efforts and generous community contributions, we’re nearly 50% of the way to our $40,000 goal. Every event and donation brings us one step closer!”

Among the businesses supporting the cause is the event’s sponsor Finck & Perris Insurance. According to Cook, the support of businesses and residents has been outstanding, but the experience of working with them has been even better.

“Working on this fundraising committee, I have met so many helpful and generous people, whether it’s local businesses or individuals of all ages,” said Cook. “With these two additional courts, we will welcome even more players, families, and especially senior citizens to this fun and healthy sport, and to visit our local businesses in our thriving little city.”

The tournament will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Easthampton High School with different time slots for each division. It includes intermediate divisions for women, men and mixed teams, as well as advanced divisions for men and mixed teams. Each player is guaranteed four games in a round-robin style of play. Registration is $45 per player. For more information, please visit the social media pages of Easthampton Pickleball.
