Attend Somers Village Players open house

Date: 5/31/2018

SOMERS – The Somers Village Players theatre group will be hosting an open house on June 3 and welcomes locals to explore the facility, learn more about what the Village players do, and potentially join the group in time for their fall musical “Little Shop of Horrors.”

In 1971 a group of Somers residents began their own theater group, now known as the Somers Village Players. Every year since, the Village Players has produced at least one play each year.

“Musicals, dramas and comedies have been staged in schools, Town Hall, at Camp Aya Po and recently at Joanna’s Banquet Hall. In addition, the Players have supported the Somers High Drama Club and sponsored summer classes for Children’s Theatre,” Somers Village Players Publicity Chair Angela Taylor explained.

In addition, the Players have donated thousands of dollars in scholarships. At the open house, $3,000 worth of scholarships will be awarded to three recipients.

Taylor explained that at the open house, there will be “stations” set up to represent the different roles within the organization, including director, producer, technical director, publicity, and more. Each station will have an individual there to explain what they do in their role, and why their job is important.

“Front of house would include things like ushering, house manager, box office, etc. Back of house is the tech side, but also includes director and stage manager. Administrative would be housing, scholarships, publicity, play reading,” Taylor said.

The Somers Village Players are looking for on stage talent as well as talents backstage in all capacities. Taylor encourages anyone interested in joining the group to attend the open house on June 3 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 55 School St. in Somers. Light refreshments will be served.
