ENFIELD, CT - The Enfield Congregational Church is preparing for their upcoming Craft Fest on Nov. 12 and 13.
This year, Craft Fest will have a takeout pork roast dinner on Nov. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. On Nov. 13, there will be a variety of vendors and crafters showcasing hand-painted art on canvas, wood size mesh wreaths, jewelry and candles to soaps, fabric ornaments, sports cards and other vendor items. Additionally there will be gift baskets, a cookie walk, bake table, knit and sewn goods, Christmas wreaths and plants, as well as a takeout lunch featuring: a chicken salad sandwich, chips and the church’s famous corn chowder.
The proceeds of the craft’s event support the church’s budgets, operations and missions of reaching out to the community.
“We hope to attract people to our church. We’re a welcoming community that attracts all kinds of people of all different facets and welcome them to join our church or just to visit,” said Marilyn Cowles, the head of the Craft Fest. “We ask people to wear masks and each station will have hand sanitizer available for use. We’ll try to keep the flow of traffic going in one direction throughout the church.”
The Enfield Congregational, United Church of Christ church was authorized in 1683. Their first building was located at what is now the entrance to the Enfield Street Cemetery. Their second church building was constructed in 1708 and their third building was built in 1775, which is currently occupied by the Enfield Historical Society. When their current building opened in 1849, the old building was moved across the street, rotated 180 degrees and had columns added to match the Greek Revival style of the new building.
The Craft Fest began in December 1953 and was known as the Christmas Bizarre, a tradition that is being continued. In 2009, the date was changed to November and was renamed the Craft Fest.
“It has helped bring people together, work together and to get to know other,” Cowles responded. “We’ve had a great tune out prior to COVID for the Craft Fest. I would guess about 400 folks might have passed through our doors. This year, we hope to return to normal and have an even greater attendance.”
The annual Craft Fest will take place on Nov. 12 from 2 to 7 p.m. and Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The church is located at 1295 Enfield St.
