ENFIELD, CT – Eighty-two members of the military deployed overseas from Enfield, Somers and Suffield recently received a care package in time for the holidays, the work of dedicated volunteers of Enfield Hooah.
Barbara O’Boyle of Somers, one of the many volunteers, explained to Reminder Publications the organization and its mission to support local troops was founded by Lori Gates and this is the eighth time members of the community have come together to send snacks and holiday messages to the service members.
Enfield Hooah is described on its website (http://enfieldhooah.org) as an organization designed “to salute our hometown heroes of past, present and future. It is our goal to provide a place for local families and members of our Armed Forces to come together, share resources and find help when they need it most.”
The group solicits names and addresses of those serving overseas from the area, as well as the donations for the packages
This year, the group packed and shipped 1,177 pounds of homemade cookies, popcorn, candy and other items from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. O’Boyle explained those participating in the program gathered at the Enfield American Legion the day after Thanksgiving to assemble and pack the boxes. Some people dropped off their donations, while others stayed to put the boxes together.
O’Boyle said the event “is so much fun to do” and added, “it’s fun to be part of community involvement. I wish for other to see the honor in it.”
Enfield Hooah solicits contributions to pay for the shipping, O’Boyle noted.
According to the website, the organization maintains drop boxes at the Village Center located at 100 High St. in Enfield and area businesses for donations to care packages that are shipped throughout the year to troops.
