Enfield Public Library kicks off community food drive

Date: 11/3/2022

ENFIELD – The Enfield Public Library is having a food drive from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. Residents can donate any non-perishable item from canned goods, boxed pasta, jars of sauce, cookies, candy, and coffee. Proceeds from the drive will go toward the Enfield Food Shelf, a nonprofit community food bank serving Enfield families and individuals in need of food assistance.

“Enfield is a very socio-economically diverse community,” said Library Director Jason Neely. “There are people that are in need of food year-round particularly around the holidays and everyone wants to have a nice meal for their families.”

He went on to say, “There are added challenges this holiday season; inflation is through the roof and families are going to be struggling. An organization like the Enfield Food Shelf is vital anytime, but particularly this year.”

Every year the Enfield Public Library participates in a food drive for the Enfield Food Shelf. In years past, Neely said they had a Food for Fines program, if people had overdue fines, they would waive them from their accounts if they bought in a donation to the Food Shelf. With their Food for Fines program, the library provided nearly 60 large boxes of donated food every year for the Food Shelf.

This year is a little bit different because with their new budget cycle, they did away with overdue fines on most items in an effort to make the services a little more equitable. The library decided to re-brand Food for Fines into a Food Drive, so whenever people come in they can drop off their food item at either the Central Library on 104 Middle Rd. or the Pearl Street Branch on 159 Pearl St.. They are also conducting a raffle to a local restaurant, anyone who drops off food will be entered into it.

“I’d like to see us reach 60 boxes of donations again this year,” Neely said. “I’m really hoping to bring as much food as we have in the past. I want our community to come out and support this important local organization.”

The Enfield Public Library is open Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website at www.enfieldpubliclibrary.org to learn more information.
