ENFIELD, CT – On June 25, the Little Sisters of the Poor will be hosting their third annual Classic Car Show at 5 p.m. at St. Joseph's Residence on 1365 Enfield St.
The event will feature raffles, food, music and a DJ. There is no entry fee, but the Sisters are asking for a $5-$10 donation. Residents are advised to call ahead to enter their cars, however they also can show up. All of the proceeds will go to their ongoing building projects that are in need of being upgraded or replaced such as boilers, industrial freezers, plumbing and electrical switches. At the event, a sister will walk around and pick the three cars they like best as winners.
“We are using the funds toward our Golden Capital Campaign 22. We will be 50 years in Enfield and want our home to be in tip top shape,” said Development Director Sister Frances MacKay. “It will mostly go toward replacement of old air conditions and heating units in the residents individual rooms. We don’t have a definite goal, but just trying to make people aware of this campaign and to make our home as comfortable as we can.”
At St. Joseph's Residence, the Little Sisters of the Poor provide care for elderly residents.
Christina Gordon, the development secretary at Little Sisters of the Poor, said they have done many fundraisers throughout the year to raise funds for their home. Most of the funds they’ve received for the home and residents they take care of comes from fundraising. The idea of hosting a car show came from Sister Frances MacKay, who is from Michigan and was surrounded by the love of cars.
“My grandfather was an inventor of the Paige car along with Mr. Fredrick Osgood Paige who they named the car after,” MacKay replied. “How I got the idea was someone gave me a classic car to raffle off. I took it to many car shows and sold tickets. I was so surprised that people at the car shows were so nice to us. They treated their cars with such respect as they did us. I was a little afraid to do this in the beginning but they all made us feel so welcome.”
This year, the Sisters will be selling lunch by the bag so no one has to touch the food and they noted they will try to keep the cars and owners at a safe distance.
“We’re excited to try to get back to normal and start our fundraisers,” Gordon reiterated.
