Somers Rec. Department’s new programs for 2022

SOMERS, CT – The Somers Recreation Department is adding new programs for the new year.

Director of Recreation and Leisure Services Maureen Parsell told Reminder Publishing the mission of the Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life of their residents and strengthen the bonds of community by offering diverse and affordable recreational and cultural programs in welcoming and safe parks and recreation facilities. She said they strive to make fitness, health and wellness a priority for people of all ages, and aim to create a happy and healthy community where residents come together to play, learn and live.

The Recreation Department is planning to offer additional after school programs such as art and STEM programs this year.

Additionally, they are also planning to create an Outdoor Adventure Club for youth, families and adults.

“These new programs are in addition to enhancing our current program offerings,” said Parsell. “We are always looking for volunteers and/or instructors to teach new classes or programs. We also work cooperatively with the Department of Public Works on improvements and field maintenance for our parks and with the Open Space and Trails Committee on the preservation and maintenance of the trail network system in the town of Somers.”

Their current programs include: before/after school care for kindergarten-5th Grade, summer day camp and small fry camp, adult and youth pickleball, adult and youth tennis, adult co-ed kickball and adult cornhole league. They also have flag football, disc golf, golf camp, whiffle ball camp, futsal and street soccer skills camp, gymnastics, Tabata fitness, yoga, tot soccer and tot basketball and virtual jukebox bingo. In addition they host cookie & cupcake decorating classes, a gingerbread decorating contest, a holiday home and yard decorating contest, holiday wreath giveaway, turkey scavenger hunt, Valentine’s scavenger hunt, St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt and “You’ve Been Egged” for Easter.

“Our recreation programs are very well attended as our classes frequently fill to the maximum capacity. We encourage early registration for our programs,” Parsell added.
