SOMERS, CT – At this year’s Tolland County Farm Bureau’s annual meeting on Oct. 5, the local farming community will come together for a series of community workshops and celebrate their 103rd anniversary with a barbeque.
The theme of the event, at Pleasant View Farm and Café in Somers, is “How to make your farming operation successful,” said Ann Murphy of the Tolland County Farm Bureau. The workshops and dinner are open to anyone interested in supporting and sustaining agriculture, Murphy said.
Registration starts at 2:30 p.m. and the workshops begin at 3 p.m. The admission and barbeque are free if participants pre-register at 860-742-5725 or tollandcountyfarmbureau@gmail.com.
The first workshop, “Preparing For The Vet,” runs from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., during which Fenton River Veterinary Clinic Owners Drs. Heidi and Scott Morey will explain how to properly secure and prepare farm animals for veterinarian visits.
During the second workshop, “Are You Covered? Farm Liability Basics,” Mike Spaulding of Nationwide Insurance will discuss how to protect assets in case of an accident. That presentation runs from 3:35 p.m. to 4:05 p.m.
Beekeeping 101 is the topic of the third workshop, from 4:10 to 4:40 p.m. and is presented by Mark Creighton, master beekeeper and aviary inspector.
The final workshop, from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m., is “Are Your Animals Eating Right?” a presentation by Louis Lipton, of Pleasant View Farms and Kalmbach Feed on choosing the right animal nutrition products.
After the workshops, the barbeque dinner will feature a menu of hamburgs, hotdogs, chips, potato salad, coleslaw, ice cream and cookies. There will also be a Tolland County Scholarship Fundraiser featuring basket and 50/50 raffles.
The keynote speaker at the barbeque dinner will be Winter Caplanson, photographer and editor of Connecticut Food and Farm Magazine, founder and executive director of the Coventry Regional Farmers’ Market. The topic of her speech will be “Telling Your Story: How to Effectively Promote Your Farm Products.”
