Dickinson Farm credits higher sales to COVID-19 pandemic

Date: 7/2/2021

GRANBY – Family-owned Dickinson Farm and Greenhouse on 309 East State St. opened their farm stand for the season on June 24, and it will remain open until Oct. 30. During the summer, residents can pick their own blueberries at the farm’s New Ludlow Road location, and there will be seasonal apple picking at their 134 South St. location. For over 65 years, Dickinson Farm has been providing top quality products and service to local communities.

“My grandparents started this farm,” said Owner Michael LaFlamme. “We are one of the few farms in our area that grows as many fruits and vegetables as we do.” He went on to say, “We start with strawberries then blueberries, apples and peaches. Those are some of the fruits that we grow for our farm stand. As far as vegetables, it can go from A-Z like corn, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini squash, butternut, acorn and pumpkins.”

At their greenhouse, they sell annuals, perennials, rose bushes, geraniums, hanging baskets, bedding plants, vegetable plants and herbs.

Manager and daughter Brenda Cierpial added, “It’s a lot of other things in the farm stand besides fruits and vegetables. We have fresh bakery items delivered every day. In the fall we do our own cider donuts and pies.”

She continued, “We have lots of nuts, dried fruit, spices, seasonings, jams, oils, milk, ice cream, cheese, eggs, butter and turkey pot pies. We sell local honey and maple syrup. We also have fresh Polish food such as pierogies and kielbasa chili.”

Through this past year, LaFlamme said the farm has done better because of the pandemic. He noted the farm did better last year because people couldn’t go anywhere or do anything, so instead, they planted gardens and stayed home.

“Who knows what the future will bring with the pandemic,” LaFlamme replied. “I'm glad that it's almost gone, but we did better last year. We are a family farm, and we have our seasons in the business that we do. Right now, we’re focusing on our farm stand with a lot of our own fruit and vegetables starting with blueberries and strawberries along with lettuce, carrots, radishes, beets and sweet corn.”

The Dickinson Farm and Greenhouse is open seven days a week from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. For more information log on to dickinsonsfarm.com or call at 467-3794.
