Earth Day cleanup aims to beautify Granby streets

Date: 3/30/2022

GRANBY – The Keep Granby Beautiful organization hopes to beautify the town streets during their fifth annual Earth Day Cleanup.

Jaime LeBreton, group leader of Keep Granby Beautiful, said that the goal of this cleanup is to fill 400 bags of trash from various town streets such as East Street, Amherst Street, Taylor Street, Carver Street and more.

“That should make a pretty big dent in our very long streets of Granby,” said LeBreton.

This year, Keep Granby Beautiful is asking residents to go out anytime between now and Earth Day to begin filling trash bags.

“This year, what we’re doing is asking people to pick a spot on their own and pick up a bag of litter. It usually only takes 30 minutes to fill one trash bag and, since we have about 400 people in our Facebook group, I figured one bag per person. That shouldn’t be too hard,” said LeBreton.

To showcase the event and stay motivated, LeBreton said residents are encouraged to post pictures of their trash cleanup on the Keep Granby Beautiful Facebook page.

“Everyone can get motivated and excited about getting our town clean,” she said.

Those who go out for the cleanup are reminded to wear gloves and bright clothing and walk against traffic.

Returnable bottles and cans can be kept to donate to the Boy Scouts and other trash should be placed in the resident’s own trash bins when possible. LeBreton said that they also are working on other disposal options for large amounts of trash.

LeBreton said that cleaning up the streets of town feels extremely rewarding.

“Coming together as a community to clean up our streets feels so good. You feel like you are doing something to help the environment, which needs us right now, and with all that’s going on in the world, it’s like one small thing that you can do to make a difference. It makes you feel proud to clean up your streets,” she said.

Those who are unable to participate in the cleanup themselves are able to donate money to Keep Granby Beautiful by visiting their Facebook page or contacting LeBreton directly.

LeBreton said they are also always looking for new members to join.

“It’s a group effort. We need more of our community to join and help us clean up,” she said.

LeBreton said that she is most excited about seeing the community come together for a cause.

“I’m excited because it’s really fun to see everybody get out there and take pride in our little town,” she said. “Everybody gets involved and picking up litter becomes addicting, believe it or not. It really makes the streets look so much better, so inviting and healthy.”
