GRANBY — The School Committee closed out business for the year during its final meeting of the 2022-2023 school year on June 6.
One of the first things the committee decided on as the school year ends was a vote to dispose of dysfunctional technology. The district will dispose of equipment that has become obsolete or no longer functions properly.
According to the technology department in the district, the disposed items will be given to a company that breaks down and recycles old tech. Last year through the same process the district was credited between $700 and $800 that went back into supporting new equipment.
Of note of the equipment being disposed of are Chromebooks that students at Granby Junior-Senior High School use. Battery swelling of the laptops has led to a condition where the devices are not worth repairing.
The committee also discussed School Choice applications where Superintendent Stephen Sullivan said applications are still coming and students and families will be notified of their status in the fall.
“Right now we’re really looking at getting letters out for people accepted and the lottery which would take place the week of the [June 20], so by the end of that week families should be receiving letters from us about acceptance, or if they’re on a waiting list and the number based on the lottery,” Sullivan said.
Committee member Stephanie Parent asked Sullivan how advertising goes for notifying people of the district’s School Choice or if there has been any efforts made through social media in expanding the notice. Sullivan said in the past they’ve used the flyer for the Junior-Senior High School but have not posted anything this year.
Sullivan said outside of an outlier of 10 applicants just for first graders, applicants from grades 7 to 12 are making up about half of all applicants.
The final piece from Sullivan’s final superintendent report of the school year noted that the district has released a draft of an updated Strategic Plan for schools. The plan has been shared with the school community and a survey is available through a google form for feedback. Sullivan said the district leadership team will be looking over feedback all summer as they continue the process of drafting a new Strategic Plan for the district.
