Granby School Committee updates athletics COVID-19 clearance policy

Date: 7/27/2022

GRANBY – The School Committee introduced Physical Education and Wellness teacher Dylan Dubuc as the new Athletic Director for Granby Junior-Senior High School (GJSHS) during their July 19 meeting.

Dubuc is entering his sixth-year teaching at the school and said he is excited to be taking on the position. Superintendent Stephen Sullivan introduced Dubuc and said he is excited to have him in the role.

“Having an internal person is certainly helpful in terms of building relationships with our student athletes and families. I’m really happy to have Dylan in the position and he seems eager to hit the ground running,” Sullivan said.

Dubuc wasted no time and brought forth a request to the committee that was quickly approved unanimously to amend the district’s athletics COVID-19 clearance policy. The policy in place since high school sports resumed during the coronavirus pandemic was that when a student athlete would test positive for COVID-19, it was a requirement they saw their physician to get cleared and come back to play.

The new athletic director came to the committee asking to change the word requirement to recommendation within the written policy. The request came after discussions within the Athletic Department’s administration team after coordination with the school’s nursing team.

Dubuc added they reached out to school-contracted physician Thomas Wadzinski for his thoughts and received the same recommendation for the change. According to Dubuc, Wadzinski said coaches and the athletic department should still be keeping an eye on student athletes returning from COVID-19 for fatigue issues and if they are still present, coaches should give another recommendation to students to visit their primary care doctor.

Chair Jennifer Bartosz asked the new athletic director what the timetable is for a student who chooses not to go see their doctor after having the illness to which Dubuc responded by saying they would just be following the guidelines in place for quarantining. A student will have to quarantine for five days after a positive test and not be showing symptoms after those five days before returning.

Donation to Pathways Program

Two electric stoves and one refrigerator were donated from Granby Schools facilities coordinator John Sullivan to the Pathways Program, a program designed for students diagnosed with Autism and/or other global developmental delays.

The program offers targeted opportunities for inclusion designed to support students who have delays in social interactions, activities of daily living, language and cognitive skills. Opportunities for community outings and goals related to transition support students’ ability to become more independent.
The School Committee unanimously voted to accept the gifts. The donations will go into the Pathways Program space being established at the High School as a continuation of the program from East Meadow School.

Superintendent Sullivan said the maintenance crew of the new space has accomplished a lot of work as the space nears completion. Floors have been put in and the cabinets in the space have been painted. The donations will go in this room and provide valuable resources to the space and those who use it.
