GRANBY - The Granby Selectboard met to discuss a variety of agenda items on Sept. 7. Citizen Crystal Dufraine questioned the board about money allocated from taxpayers two years ago to fund park updates, studies and improvements.
Dufraine said that taxpayers paid $50,000 for park updates and improvements. She wanted to know what was updated or done so far. She also wanted to know if the $75,000 allocated from taxpayers had been used for a conservation study to dredge the ponds and if a logging company had been contacted for improvements.
Dufraine asked a final question about park safety and a possible inspection on the playground.
“I’ve been over there recently with my kids and I was just wondering when the last time it was inspected. There’s supposed to be a 12-foot drop-zone of mulch and you can see the dirt there, there’s definitely not a 12-foot drop zone,” she said.
She noted that there wouldn’t be enough padding for kids if they were to fall and it could be a liability for the town.
Town Administrator Christopher Martin said that some updates on the park have been started but not all. He said that there has been some tree removal and that some drainage work was completed near the playscape.
Martin also said that it has been hard to get improvements and projects, such as the dredge, moving due to COVID-19, long wait times, shutdowns and companies facing a lack of employees.
“It’ll all just take time to deal with,” he said.
The Selectboard said that they would check with the director of parks on the playground inspection.
Martin said that he received a request from interim Fire Chief Micheline Turgeon to make three acting lieutenants permanent. Turgeon was unable to attend the meeting herself due to training.
“I think we need to discuss with our interim chief why she’s putting these people up. I’d be very interested in why she’s putting them up,” said Jennifer Silva, Selectboard chair.
They made a request that Turgeon attend the next meeting to give more information before approval.
During the meeting, a member of the Charter Day Committee also gave an update. She said that the event, originally scheduled for Oct. 9, is now cancelled. This is due to a lack of funding, a shortage of available food trucks and a shortage of available bands. She said that they will start planning for next year’s Charter Day instead.
Granby will host two fall yard waste days and a bulky waste day, approved by the Selectboard. The yard waste days will be Oct. 30 and Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Crescent St. The bulky waste day will be Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. also on Crescent St.
According to the Selectboard, the search for a permanent fire chief is still ongoing. There has been one applicant so far and the search will continue until Oct. 2.
