Sapowsky’s farm stand anticipates opening in May

Date: 4/12/2021

GRANBY – Sapowsky Farms on 434 East State St. will be opening their farm stand for this upcoming season on May 1. Sapowsky Farms is host to a full-service road side stand located on Route 202 with vegetable plants, flower plants, perennials, asparagus, local beef and fresh fruit. The farm will also have bakery products from their bake shop at the stand.

Sapowsky Farms is a family business that has been around since 1947; specializing in high quality, home grown produce such as strawberries, tomatoes and sweet corn, as well as green beans, yellow beans and squash.

"We plant corn anywhere from April 1 to July 21 every week to provide a constant supply for the summer," owner Steve Sapowsky told Reminder Publishing. "We recently planted a huge field of corn and we're about a week ahead of last year."

He continued, “People come from all over. We have people come from Springfield, Monson and Palmer. They’ll take a weekly trip to come down and get stuff. We are right on the main highway. It’s easy to get to and that's probably part of our success a lot of cars go by people see us.”

Sapowsky's father came from a dairy farm. During that time, he said all small dairy farms raised crops to supplement their income because a typical herd of dairy cows in Granby was 30 cows and a big herd would have been 50. His father raised vegetables and small orchards to supplement their income. Then he decided to go into vegetable farming. That's when he went off on his own and started buying a little bit of land to get farming.

“I grew up farming,” Sapowsky said. “I was by my father’s side seven days a week and learned as I went along. It was something I took to and it was just something that came natural to me. When I graduated from high school that’s what I was going to do.”

Through COVID-19, Sapowsky said their farm remained very busy and were able to contain “It worked out pretty good. It’s unfortunate under the situation I would rather not have to ever do that again, but I think we provided a good service for everybody and I think people appreciated it,”  replied Sapowsky.

“I just try to serve the people as well as I can. My wife and the rest of our staff have worked really hard to provide service for the customers,” he added.
