School Committee discusses open vice chair seat, winter sports

Date: 2/9/2021

GRANBY – On the evening of Feb. 2, the Granby School Committee came together via Zoom to discuss the reorganization of their committee and elect a new vice chairperson.

Former Vice Chair Jennifer Bartosz has now taken the position of chair after former Chair Emre Evren stepped down. His attendance at the Jan. 26 meeting marked the end of his nine years on the School Committee. They intended to discuss the reorganization of the subcommittee for finance and potentially introduce a new member. However, due to the inclement weather on Feb. 1 the Selectboard meeting was postponed until Feb. 8. At this point Bartosz said there are two individuals that are interested – Jill Pelletier and Nita Abbott. Both of them along with the committee will be at the Selectboard’s Feb. 8 meeting.

Update on Winter and Fall II sports

Assistant Principal Alison Jordan-Gagner gave the committee an update on winter sports as well as a couple of sports she needed them to approve. Gagner said there are some sports that she is in the beginning stages of moving to Fall II which starts on March 1. Those sports will be cross country, united basketball with virtual practices and e-sports which their season begins the week after the February vacation.

As an update for winter sports Gagner stated, “We’re still going with March 1 which is Fall II. We are still waiting on the green light from the board of health which we are working on. Our registration numbers are good and kids have another four weeks to sign up.”

She continued, “Swimming is doing great. Hockey has been approved from the South Hadley School Committee and they started last Wednesday. All is looking good at our end and with the numbers declining which I think that they are and the town all should be good for March 1.” Unanimously, the committee made a motion to approve the updated fall sports.

COVID–19 Numbers in Town

Interim Superintendent Carol Hepworth announced that COVID-19 cases in the community are going down.

“The number that was pulled down for Thursday, Feb. 4 it looks like we will be in the yellow,” Hepworth replied. “We are also below five percent positivity rate. We are at a 4.93 percent I believe right now as well as our numbers in the town are trending down. We’re hopeful that this week is yellow and that we are heading in a direction where we’re reducing the numbers of positive cases in the community.”

Hepworth has updated the reopening plan which is on the website for parents to see. She also said, “I’m watching the numbers in the town. Two weeks in the yellow at which point we will transition the students that have already been in the building as well as second and seventh grade. Feb. 22 is what we’re looking for. Two weeks of yellow and we'll be getting those kids right back after vacation.”
