GRANBY — The Selectboard took time during its Sept. 5 meeting to provide updates on a couple different projects around town.
The first notice from the meeting was a reminder for Bulky Waste Day which will be on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Highway Garage at 15 Crescent St. Attendees are asked to please approach the collection facility from West Street.
Bulky wastes are non-recyclable items such as mattresses, appliances, furniture and carpeting, as well as electronics that are too big to be collected with the normal trash pick up. There is a fee for disposal and can only be paid through money orders or checks payable to the town of Granby only.
Notable fee prices for bulky items include $10 for furniture, doors, rugs, hot water tanks, TV screens up to 25 inches, computers, and propane tanks, and $25 for mattresses, box springs, air conditioners, and copy machines. Some items cost between $5 and $25 to dispose of and it cost $5 to dispose of an auto tire, $20 to dispose of each large truck tire, and $100 for each tractor tire.
Illegal dumping will result in a loss of privileges and anyone using the facility must be able to produce proof of residency upon request.
Another update came to the board on behalf of resident George Randall who shared the Veteran’s monument of the Granby Veterans Memorial project continues to be nearing its completion as the structure itself is up and now the committee involved is discussing a suitable option for the plaques that will be on the structure.
Randall said the committee was soon meeting with two perspective vendors and then needed approval from the fire chief.
“The lawn damage that we did to put the post in has been repaired. The site looks nice. We have a landscaper from the Fire Department who has dug out around the post so we can put flowers in there and stuff, and he’s dug out a walkway from the post to the sidewalk,” Randall said.
He added they believe they don’t have to apply for an electrical permit as the site will be green as they will utilize solar power.
“We were hoping to have a formal dedication this year, but it looks like if we can’t pull it off by the middle of November then it’ll be next May,” Randall said. “I’m probably going to lean toward next May because we don’t want to rush this. We want it to be nice and everything to be with the blessing of the fire chief and Chief O’Grady because they’re part of it too.”
Selectboard Chair Glen Sexton asked if the new sidewalk to be put in would be concrete or a different material. Randall said it would be patio block. Updates are expected throughout the fall.
