Volunteers sought for return of Granby Charter Days

Date: 4/26/2022

GRANBY – After a two year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Granby Charter Days are set to return for a weekend of fun. The event will take place June 10 to 12.

The Granby Charter Days are a celebration of the town receiving its charter and becoming its own entity in 1768. The Charter Days Committee was formed in the 1980s and the first celebration only lasted for one day.

According to Chair of the Charter Days Committee Crystal Dufresne, the celebration started as arts and crafts and informational booths at Dufresne Park.
Now, the celebration is a whole weekend of rides, food trucks, live music and more.

“It had such a positive impact on the community that they decided to do it every year,” said Dufresne. “From there, it just grew bigger and bigger.”

On June 10, there will be food trucks and rides, the Massachusetts Truck Pulling Association hosting truck pulls, live music from Trailer Trash and a Post 266 beer tent.

On June 11, there will be a fishing derby, a pancake breakfast hosted by the Granby Police Department, three live bands, food, rides, the Post 266 beer tent and fireworks.

The weekend will end on Sunday with tractor pulls for all ages, food and rides.
Dufresne said that the entire community seems excited for the return of the Charter Days. “I think we’re all excited. The community was super excited when we told them we were having it and we were bringing it back, so I think it’s going to be a really great turnout,” she said.

However, the committee is in need of volunteers to help them make sure the event runs smoothly.

“The only thing I’m afraid of is not having enough volunteers to properly man the parking, that’s a big one, and then just help around picking up trash and emptying trash barrels and stuff like that,” said Dufresne.

The committee is seeking as many volunteers as they can get and they are hopeful that people can sign up for at least two hour volunteering shifts. Volunteers would be helping with parking, picking up trash, working different areas of the celebration and more.

“There are just certain things we run into where it would be nice to have extra help and extra bodies,” said Dufresne.

She encouraged people to volunteer in order to give back to the community and make sure the fair can go on.

“The more volunteers we can get, the smoother it’s going to flow,” said Dufresne.

As an incentive, those who sign up to volunteer will receive free parking for the entire weekend.

“That’s how much we need help. We’re trying to give people some kind of incentive in order to help us and that’s one of the things we can do without it being monetary and taking away from the fair,” Dufresne said.

Those interested in volunteering are able to get more information and sign up for shifts on the Granby Charter Days Committee’s Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/granbyvolunteers or on their website at https://www.granby-ma.gov/charter-day-committee.
