Puppolo focuses effort on re-election to HouseDate: 1/26/2022 BOSTON – State Rep. Angelo J. Puppolo, Jr. announced on Jan. 24 that he will not run for the state Senate, but will instead, run for re-election to 12th Hampden District in the state’s House of Representatives. Puppolo had been mulling over a run for the 1st Hampden and Hampshire state Senate seat. Eric Lesser, who currently occupies the seat, is running for Lieutenant Governor.
Puppolo, the chair of the Joint Committee on Export Development, cited his role in the House as a “major” factor in his decision. “It’s about where I can be the most effective and be able to bring home the bacon for the people in Western Massachusetts and the commonwealth,” Puppolo told Reminder Publishing while he was considering the seat.
In a press release announcing his decision, Puppolo’s office stated, “Being the ‘Dean’ of the Springfield Delegation, the second most senior Democratic member in all of the local area, and the third senior Democratic member from the City of Worcester west to New York plays a significant role in his ability to get things done.”
Puppolo pointed to work in the state House of Representatives for the past 15 years. “We’ve done a lot of great things, but there is more work that needs to be done. I have the proven track record to get real results,” he said in the statement, adding, “I have the experience and the relationships in the House to continue bringing more resources to our area. I am not afraid to speak up when it comes to advocating for my district and its residents. I know how to navigate the system and to get things done.”
While no one has officially declared their candidacy, State Rep. Jacob Oliveira of the 7th Hampden District and Longmeadow Select Board Chair Marc Strange are both considering a run for the district, which includes the towns of East Longmeadow, Hampden, Longmeadow, Ludlow, Wilbraham, Belchertown and Granby, as well as portions of Springfield and Chicopee.
