BRIMFIELD – The Brimfield Town Common will soon see improvements, as the gazebo construction nears completion.
Bob Corey, of the Historical Commission, provided an update of the Town Common project, during the Brimfield Board of Selectmen meeting on April 11.
Corey explained that the gazebo is being constructed right now in Pennsylvania. He said that when looking around at what other towns have done with their commons, all of them have an American Flag, historical signs and so on. Brimfield plans to utilize similar ideas.
In an effort to minimize the maintenance, Corey said the gazebo is being modeled in a way that is “best practices.”
As of now, it looks like the gazebo will be placed on the common in mid-May. The gazebo will not be available during the Memorial Day celebration at the end of the month, as this area will have been freshly seeded. Nonetheless, Corey said, “This summer, it should be fully functioning.”
He continued, “In keeping with the very generous $100,000 grant from the commonwealth, we have spent about half of it on the gazebo itself. At this point, [about] $53,000.” Corey added that they also have an $11,000 donation for the beautification of the common.
Corey said the Historical Commission has proposed “a number of embellishments” to get an idea of what could be done to the common, along with the costs. Some of these ideas, as explained by Corey, include a sign of historical facts about the common on one side and a list of upcoming events on the other side; steel trash cans with a dome covering for various weather and decorations such as lights, to name a few.
A “Brimfield Massachusetts” sign is also slated to be placed over the front entrance. Corey said this will be a black sign with gold lettering. He reiterated that all of the work being conducted is to “beautify” the common.
The Board of Selectmen thanked Corey for his work on this prolonged project and noted they look forward to its completion.
The next scheduled Board of Selectmen meeting is set to take place on April 25.
