Brimfield town election features two contested races

Date: 6/7/2023

BRIMFIELD — The annual town election will take place on Tuesday, June 20, from noon until 8 p.m. at the Town Hall.

Voters may choose to vote by mail, but must obtain an application to do so and the application must be to the town clerk by 5 p.m. five business days before election day.

Voters may also use an absentee ballot if needed. Both the absentee ballot and vote by mail application are available on the town’s website at brimfieldma.org/town-clerk.

The town uses both a caucus process and a nomination paper option for election candidates. The caucus is much like a town meeting setup, where any registered voter in town may nominate a candidate.

Although it is not extremely common in the towns surrounding Brimfield, the caucus serves to shorten the time candidates need to spend rounding up signatures as they can wait for caucus night and need only one nomination to be considered for the ballot.

The caucuses have always been set 14 days prior to the cut-off date of nomination paper submissions, according to Town Moderator Michael Miller. Miller said this is designed to potentially help fill any open seats remaining after the caucus.

Those candidates who use nomination papers to be considered for candidacy in the election must collect a minimum of 20 signatures to get on the ballot.

This year, there are only two contested races. One seat is open for Select Board member for a term of three years, with two candidates running. Both candidates are caucus nominees and new candidates vying for the position opening, as current member Alan Bercovici’s term will be up and Bercovici will not be running again. Michael Cordi and Paul Vandal will challenge each other in this race.

The second contested race is for one open position for town moderator for a term of three years. In previous years, town moderator was a one year position and had to be voted upon annually.

Miller, who has served as moderator for the last 16 years, is up for reelection with nomination papers, running against R. Mitchell Frazier, a new candidate and caucus nominee.

For a term of three years on the Board of Assessors, caucus nominee Lynne Mayotte is running unopposed.

Two positions are open on the Board of Health for a term of three years each, with Karen Marino and Magda Polack running. Both candidates are up for reelection and caucus nominees.

Incumbent and caucus nominee Eric Jaeger is running unopposed for reelection for a three-year term on the Elementary School Committee.

For a five-year position on the Planning Board, candidate Uriah Smith is running with nomination papers.
One position is open for a term of three years on the Cemetery Commission, with candidate for reelection and caucus nominee Michael Wales running.

Two three-year library trustee positions are open. Michael Defalco and Catherine Wickens, both up for reelection and caucus nominees, are running for these seats.

Harding Fund trustee for a term of three years has reelection candidate and caucus nominee Anthony Bys running.

Lincoln Fund Trustee for a term of three years has reelection candidate and caucus nominee Anthony Bys running.

One position for a term of three years is open on the Tantasqua School Committee, with Jennifer Polesnak-Custance running for reelection as a caucus nominee.
