HOLLAND – As part of Massachusetts’ Walktoberfest 2022, the town of Holland will offer a one-mile guided, historical walk through the Quinebaug Woods, a Trustees of Reservation property, on Oct. 16.
From 10 to 11:30 a.m., Richard Haller, chairman of the Holland Open Space and Trails Committee, will take participants on a tour of the historic land that was purchased by his grandparents in 1931.
In 1932, Haller explained, his grandparents built a cabin on the property with a chimney that is remaining. In addition to discussing that structure, he also plans to talk about the history of the land, the prevailing stonewalls and much more dating back to the 19th century. Haller noted that he will be sharing old photos as well for walkers to develop a better understanding.
The focus of this event, as explained by Haller, is to discuss what his grandparents and parents did with the land. Of the nearly 100 acres, 32 acres have been donated to the Trustees of Reservation.
“I am 77 years old,” said Haler. “As a kid I came up here to visit my grandparents and I have wonderful memories to share [with others].”
For those who have never visited the property before, Haller believes this event is a perfect place to learn something new.
Aside from this event, Haller has conducted a tour of the land a few other times. Each tour consisted of about a dozen people – an ideal number for a guided tour, he shared.
He noted that the tour is a short walk along a flat section at the Quinebaug River, with one “little rugged” steep section.
Participants are asked to meet at the trailhead, 4 Dug Hill Rd., to begin the tour. Leashed dogs are welcome.
