HOLLAND — Kate Landers defeated Timothy West for Selectboard in the June 13 town election, the only contested race. The other candidates faced no opponents where. Only 217 of Holland’s 2,197 eligible voters cast ballots.
The annual town election took place at the Holland Community Center. Though it was Town Clerk Valerie Lundin’s first official election, she noted that past elections averaged 250 voters.
Landers and West were nominated at the April 13 town caucus. Landers received 122 votes to West’s 93. Landers will serve a three-year term on the Selectboard.
Landers thanked voters for her June 13 victory. She praised West for his effort and looked forward to working with him.
“I wanted also to thank the residents who came out to our town candidate night the week before, seeking knowledge to help them make an informed decision,” Landers stated. “It was wonderful to see. The two-way communication between the residents and the town is something that I’d like to see more of.”
She noted that residents want to reinforce the town’s website and the local cable access channel to bolster communication and share information. The website lists volunteer opportunities and employment information.
“This is my first experience in campaigning and running for office. I enjoyed meeting and having discussions with my neighbors in a new way, and I look forward to working with and for them,” Landers said.
The unopposed candidates included:
Assessor Jessica Julian
Holland School Committee Erik Iller
Holland School Committee Laura Alden
Tantasqua School Committee Member Elias Gillen
Library Trustee Steve Anderstrom
Water Commissioner Anthony Landers
Cemetery Commission and Tree Warden Brian Johnson
Board of Health Charles Furst
Constable David Mott
Planning Board Charles Furst
Treasurer Sharon Ashleigh
Ashleigh is completing the final year remaining on Linda Blodgett’s last term. Blodgett held the treasurer position for several decades. Ashleigh previously served on the Finance Committee.
