‘Trash to treasure,’ Brimfield Town Wide Tag Sale to return

Date: 5/23/2022

BRIMFIELD – For the 12th year, the Hitchcock Free Academy is set to host a Town Wide Tag Sale on June 4. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. vendors across Brimfield will be selling items for people to scavenge through.

Cindy Skowrya, executive director at Hitchcock Free Academy, said this annual event is a fundraiser for the Academy – a public nonprofit community center that serves people of all ages by providing enrichment programs and activities since 1956.
She explained that they create a map of all participating vendors and items they are selling. Individuals can buy a printed map at the Academy or download a free version on the day of the tag sale. Skowrya said this is useful for people who are searching for particular items.

All the vendors set up the tag sale at their homes. Skowrya said people get assigned a number that they pick up at Hitchcock ahead of time, making it easier for buyers to know where they’re going. She added that they also have some spots at Hitchcock Academy for vendors to set up and sell their goods.

Depending on the year, Skowrya said they sometimes have 30 vendors, or they have up to 60. She noted that this year’s participation is off to a slower start than usual.
Residents interested in participating can sign-up online at https://www.hitchcockacademy.org/ or in-person, by visiting the Academy. Vendors must sign-up ahead of time to be included on the map. Skowrya said the deadline to sign-up is May 31.

Prior to the tag sale, Skowrya encourages participating vendors to share their location and description of items being sold on social media. She said this allows vendors to “stand out.”

There is a $12 participation fee for each vendor. Skowrya said by putting the vendors and descriptions of the items they are selling on a map, it is essentially “marketing for them.”

Although the official time of the tag sale ends at 3 p.m., Skowrya said some may choose to stay open longer. Vendors are also able to reopen on Sunday as well if they indicate that ahead of time. “About 20 percent of people stay open on Sunday,” said Skowrya.

“It’s a good, fun day for everyone looking for treasures,” she said.

The tag sale is open to everyone, although vendors must reside in Brimfield.
On the day of the tag sale, Skowrya said the farmers market will be going on, in addition to food vendors at Hitchcock Academy, 2 Brookfield Rd.

When visiting vendors, Skowrya encourages everyone to be careful and cautious of not blocking the roadways.

The Brimfield Town Wide Tag Sale is sponsored by Karen King Group, a real estate agency headquartered in Monson.
