Wales Senior Center offers myriad activities

Date: 6/14/2022

WALES – The Wales Senior Center is busy, planning for countless upcoming summer activities to keep members of the community active.

The Wales Senior Center offers outreach services, serves lunch twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and overall works to provide a place for seniors to come, hang out and have the socialization that is crucial.

This month, the center has numerous activities happening including crafting, exercise classes every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., garden club, camera club, book club and an upcoming field trip to Old Sturbridge Village. The center has a “What If” presentation program by attorney Marie T. Jablonski to discuss paperwork seniors should have in order if something were to happen. A nutrition presentation program is forthcoming as well, where a representative from the Mass. Council on Aging will be coming to the center to talk about nutrition. On the first Thursday of every month, the center hosts a tech help program, where people from Fisher Tech Solutions work with seniors individually.

Director Cheri Fisher explained, “During COVID[-19], our senior population suffered from being isolated and alone. Although we played a vital role even while closed to the public in helping get the seniors and town residents acquire the initial round of COVID[-19] vaccines and providing help for them with masks, food, and rides just to name a few, we are more excited to see them coming in to be with us in person.”

The center has a Veterans Agent in attendance every Thursday to meet with veterans to help with benefits or questions that they might have. There is a rotating dementia program called Carousel Memory Café which they do in conjunction with the Brimfield and Holland Senior Centers. It’s a program where caregivers and those with dementia are welcomed to take part in an activity whether it be a music, craft or any other type of activity that might be happening, gather information if needed and more.

Starting in July the center will have representatives from state Sen. Ryan Fattman’s office to talk with residents, answer questions and address concerns.

“We are a link to help seniors find help for things they might need help with,” Fisher said. “Whether it’s helping in their home or providing a place to meet their peers and have activities to do. I would say that the Wales Senior Center is really important for keeping the senior residents active. To let them know they can get help with things if they need it and that we’re here to try and get them help if they need it.”

Wales Senior Center is on Old Stafford Rd. They’re open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. For more information or questions about programming, call the center at 245-9683 or email coa@townofwales.net.
