Wales Senior Center to offer several programs in August

Date: 8/2/2022

WALES – With a new month comes new offerings and events to occur at the Wales Senior Center.

Cheri Fisher, director of the senior center, told Reminder Publishing that there are several happenings slated for August, beginning with a tie dye event on Aug. 9. At 12:30 p.m., seniors are welcome to show up with their white T-shirts and leave with a vibrant new top. Fisher said they will be providing instruction on how to tie dye.

On Aug. 18, the second lesson of the camera workshop will begin at 12:30 p.m. Fisher explained that the workshop is ongoing, as they began this offering last month. She said that members are welcome to join at any time, as they are reviewing and moving groups along at different levels. “The group is small, so it is easy to add more,” Fisher noted.

On Aug. 17, representatives from state Sen. Ryan Fattman’s office will be at the center at 11:30 a.m. Fisher said seniors are encouraged to come with any questions or concerns. “Senator Fattman came with his representatives the first time; however, we will probably be having [communications director] William Fredericks every third Wednesday of the month,” shared Fisher. “He is open to meeting with folks privately to answer questions.”

For those who enjoy listening to live music, the center will have “Music with Dan Kirouc” on Aug. 23 at 12 p.m. Fisher said this includes piano and vocals – “pop, easy listening, 50s and 60s rock.” Participants can expect to hear artists such as the Mamas and the Papas, Elvis, Neil Sedaka, The Beatles and more.

“[The musical] program [is] supported with funds from the Wales Cultural Council and Mass Cultural Council,” she said.

Fisher shared that they have a “need” for Council on Aging (COA) advisory board members. “We are down to two and would like to have five or more,” she noted.
Fisher went on to say, “Now is a great time to join the COA advisory board and contribute to the ongoings here at the center. We are always looking for ideas for services and programs that will serve our seniors.” Those interested in becoming a member are encouraged to call the center at 245-9683.

Regarding the senior van, Fisher noted that this form of transportation is only available for appointments and shopping. “Please be sure to call your medical facility to confirm your appointment is taking place before calling us to reserve a ride,” she said. To book a ride, call the senior center directly.

“If you need a prescription pick up or have other small shopping needs, please call the center so we can arrange this for you,” said Fisher.
