Hampshire Regional chairs agree on transportation contract

Date: 6/8/2022

HAMPSHIRE COUNTY – The Hampshire Regional School Committee came to a decision about its transportation contract on May 24 with a well attended Zoom meeting .

The new agreement with Durham School Services is for five years total – three years with an option to renew for another two. Business Administrator Bobbie Jones told Reminder Publishing after the meeting that Durham was the only company to respond to the district’s request for bids. While annual costs may vary based on bus needs the cost for fiscal year 2023, first year of the new contract, would be just shy of $1.75 million, according to Jones.

All of the chairs of the participating districts were in attendance including Margaret Larson of the Hampshire Regional School Committee, Jon Lumbra from Southampton, Don Willard representing Chesterfield-Goshen, Morley Cleary of Westhampton and Matt Wilhelm of Williamsburg, as well as a few teachers and guests.

Jones started the meeting with a quick introduction before answering questions from local community members. “What I would need is to see if everyone would be in agreement and then I would make contact with the bus company so that they could start moving forward in July,” Jones said.

“So if we do this it’s year one, two, and three and then years four and five are optional to us?” asked Lumbra.

Jones responded, “Correct, we decide if we want to stay or go.”

A few people spoke up about possible bus alternatives, using different travel methods, and possibly a new plan if this falls through. However, the motion to move forward with the transportation contract was met with unanimous approval.
