Library collects masks for Westhampton Elementary students

Date: 9/23/2020

WESTHAMPTON – The Board of Health has asked the Westhampton Public Library to collect handmade cloth face masks so the elementary school students have extra masks for the school year. The library has just donated its first batch of around 100 masks for any in-person schooling.

Library Director Meaghan Schwelm said several months ago the library facilitated an ongoing effort to collect double-layer cloth masks for residents of Westhampton, made by residents.

“Our most recent request was for the extra masks for Westhampton Elementary School students, so I put a call out via our library newsletter and social media and got immediate responses. We have some very talented mask makers in town,” said Schwelm.

Schwelm is not sure how many more masks will be needed, but she asks that anyone interested can email the library at westhampton@cwmars.org before donating. If at any point people reach out and the library is no longer in need of masks, Schwelm will connect you with other organizations who are in need.

“It’s very important that masks are laundered before they are donated and that we make arrangements for masks to be dropped off. We prefer adjustable masks so that they will be comfortable for the wearer and they are primarily needed for children in grades K-2,” Schwelm said.
