WESTHAMPTON – Hampshire Regional High School will be in search of a new principal within the next couple of months after current principal Kristen Smidy recently accepted the superintendent position at Gateway Regional School District.
Michael Sullivan, the interim superintendent of Hampshire Regional School District, told Reminder Publishing that losing Smidy has been on their radar for some time. The district, however, will not be able to provide information about a specific selection process for a new principal until the incoming superintendent – Diana Bonneville – is officially hired in July. “She will be playing a determining role in this process,” said Sullivan.
During a Hampshire Regional school committee meeting on April 19, Sullivan said that he will be discussing the vacant position with Bonneville at length once she is on board.
Sullivan also added that he has sketched out a process for an “inclusive” search and screening process for a new principal that could be done in a month’s time.
The principal position, whether interim or not, will be officially open in July, and the Gateway School Committee officially approved Smidy’s contract. Sullivan’s term as superintendent is officially done in June.
Smidy was hired by the Hampshire Regional District in 2011 as the middle school assistant principal. She was in that position for two years, and then officially became principal of the high school in 2013.
“I’ve been so impressed with the Hampshire community in terms of how much they care about their students and education,” said Smidy.
