Southampton Council on Aging seeks more participants for Memory Café

Date: 3/2/2022

SOUTHAMPTON – The Southampton Council on Aging (COA) received a Title III grant through Highland Valley Elder Services to conduct a monthly Memory Café from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

According to Southampton Council on Age (COA) Director Joan Linnehan, the Memory Café is a “fun, engaging, and supportive environment” where attendees can share and receive caregiver support, education, and respite while reducing isolation.

Currently, the COA is looking for more individuals to participate in the café, according to Linnehan. “We’ll take anyone from any community,” she said.
Linnehan noted that a past Memory Café in Southampton was attended by 18 people, including volunteers. “[Memory Cafes] give people a feeling that they are not alone,” Linnehan told Reminder Publishing, adding that they started this program back in October.

The cafes are conducted at the Southampton Senior Center and welcomes all individuals experiencing different stages of memory loss, as well as caregivers, family and friends. Programs include artists, musicians, crafts, and educational events, as well as activities that promote physical fitness and sensory stimulation. A mealtime is also included within the program.

The next café is set to occur from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on March 24. For reservations and/or more information, people can call 529-2105.
