SOUTHAMPTON – The annual Memorial Day Parade in Southampton returns for the first time since 2019 on May 30 at 9 a.m.
According to Southampton Town Clerk Luci Dalton, the parade is in its 75th year, which is a milestone she and the town’s planning committee are excited to reach.
Dalton told Reminder Publishing that the parade’s usual route begins at William E. Norris School at 9 a.m., and goes to the Center Cemetery where it stops for flowers to be laid on the veterans’ graves. During this checkpoint, a short service is conducted by the First Congregational Church of Southampton pastor, and the church chorus sings. From there, the parade continues down College Highway to the center of town where the wreaths are laid on the two major monuments in town.
According to Dalton, the parade has become smaller each year, which means the town is currently looking for as many people who want to participate as possible.
“We have a few antique cars, and the Miss Western Mass. will be participating as well,” said Dalton. “But we wanted more. We are encouraging those who want to participate to contact my office.”
Residents have until May 23 to contact Dalton’s office if they would like to participate in the parade. “We are looking for anyone who has a cool car, old car, hot rod etc. or any out of the ordinary vehicle. We are also looking for dance groups, state champ athletic teams etc,” added Dalton.
Those wishing to participate in the parade can contact Dalton at townclerk@townofsouthampton.org or by calling her at 527-8392.
