WESTHAMPTON – The Westhampton Town Caucus will take place on April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Westhampton Highway Garage.
The purpose of the caucus is to nominate local officials for candidacy to be elected at the Annual Town Election.
According to information provided by the town, Westhampton is looking to fill the following positions: Selectboard, one three-year term; Board of Assessors, one three-year term, one two-year term, and one one-year term; Planning Board, one three-year term and one two-year term; Finance Committee, four three-year terms; Library Trustees, two three-year terms; Hampshire Regional School Committee, one three-year term; Westhampton Elementary School Committee, one three-year term; Moderator, one one-year term; Tree Warden, one one-year term; and Constable, one three-year term.
“A caucus is what a few towns still do instead of just having nomination papers,” said Katrin Kaminsky, Westhampton’s town clerk.
According to Kaminsky, the caucus will be a public meeting where candidates for the town election are nominated by registered voters from the community. The candidates themselves do not have to be present at the caucus to be nominated, but a registered voter of the town needs to be present at the caucus to nominate a candidate. The candidates also have to be registered voters to be eligible for the town election.
There is a warrant posted on the Westhampton website that shows what offices are needed to be filled, but there is no information on whether or not an incumbent intends to run again or not.
“At the end of the caucus, anyone who is nominated, has to accept that nomination,” said Kaminsky. The town clerk added that she believes the candidate has three days to accept the nomination.
Once candidates are nominated for the aforementioned offices, the town election will take place.
As of press time, the Annual Town Election will occur on June 5 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 1 South Rd.
