HUNTINGTON – By 3 p.m. on the first day of shotgun season for deer and bear on Nov. 29 at the B&D check-in station, a crowd of teenagers were standing around. When asked what was going on, they said it was deer season, and a deer had just been taken away.
The check-in station had already weighed in seven deer that day, all bucks, the largest a 150-pound buck with a 10-point rack. Later in the week, that deer was surpassed by a 188-pound buck bagged in Shelburne, followed a close second by a 184-pound buck from Blandford, both six-pointers.
Jacob Morris-Siegel, a stewardship biologist for MassWildlife in Dalton, who was stationed in Huntington through Dec. 4, said he had checked in 40 deer in Huntington during the week, 12 on the last Saturday with three more hours to go.
The 40th deer, which was brought in at 3 p.m., was a 135-pound eight-point buck caught by Westfield resident Jason Bean in Chesterfield, although Bean wouldn’t say exactly where.
Bear season is also underway. Morris-Siegel said no one had brought a bear into the Huntington check-in, but other stations in the area had seen them. He said hunters can now check in bear they’ve shot online at MassFishHunt. During the second week of deer shotgun season, deer may also be checked in online.
The 2021 shotgun season for deer and bear ends on Dec. 11.
