Chester board wants free Comcast Wi-Fi at Littleville Fair

Date: 7/27/2023

CHESTER — At the Board of Selectmen meeting on July 17, Andy Sutton said the town is waiting for Comcast to turn on Wi-Fi for two weeks for the Littleville Fair.

Sutton said he spoke to Comcast Senior Vice President Eileen Leahy, who remembered what had been done in the past, but indicated the company wants to charge the town to turn it on.  He said that he explained the fair is a nonprofit, charitable organization, but the company spokesperson said free drops are for municipal buildings only.

Board Chair John Baldasaro noted that the contract with Comcast expires in 2025.

“Something like this can be the difference between a one-year license and a five-year license. This is ridiculous — it would cost them nothing. It’s ridiculous — I was doing [police] details when they ran those lines on those poles.  Turning them on is not a big issue,” Baldasaro said. He said bandwidth might be a problem, as there will be a lot of people at one time.

“This is bureaucratic. It should not be an issue. It’s detrimental to not have that service there,” Baldasaro said, adding, “It’s nothing for Comcast.” He also said this may impact negotiations with the company.

As of Saturday, July 22, Wi-Fi still had not been turned on for the fairgrounds.

Littleville Fair president Moe Boisseau said the fairgrounds had Wi-Fi last year, which makes everything easier for the all-volunteer run event.  The Littleville Fair runs this year from Aug. 4 to 6.
