Energy company gives $5k to build pavilion on Town Green

Date: 8/12/2021

GRANVILLE – A Canadian company has donated $5,000 to the Granville Green Committee toward the construction of a new pavilion on the Town Green.

Grasshopper Energy, a sustainable energy and solar company based in Ontario, Canada, has a location in Granville and donated the money to the committee for their ongoing project to fund a new pavilion.

“We are grateful to the Granville Green Committee, who have given us the chance to partner and contribute to this wonderful community effort to bring this long-awaited pavilion project to reality” said Azeem M. Qureshi, CEO and founder of Grasshopper Energy, in a statement.

“We are very appreciative to Grasshopper Energy for the $5,000 donation we received. With town folks’ donations of $5404.81, we now have the funds to build the pavilion on our beautiful Town Green,” said Linda Blakesley, head of the Green Committee, which was formed to maintain the town’s green public spaces.

Blakesley said that she and the rest of the committee did not think that they would be able to complete this project for some time, due to a lack of funds. Suddenly, she said, Grasshopper donated the $5,000 and got them to almost the amount they think they need to purchase the pavilion.

“We are just a small little committee. We had put the pavilion on hold because of COVID,” said Blakesley. “We’re trying to see how quickly we can get this going now.”

The donation came at a good time, Blakesley said. Because of the pandemic, Granville was unable to have its annual Harvest Fair last year, which is the main fundraiser for the Green Committee.

The initial hope when the donation came in, according to Blakesley, was that the pavilion could be done by fall. That seems less likely now, she said, because of how much of the Green Committee is volunteer work, which can be more difficult to organize so that everybody can get together.

She said the plan is to build a pavilion 30 feet by 24 feet in area, with a peaked roof on all sides. The pavilion would ideally be open so that one could see through it from all sides. Blakesley said she is unsure if they will get a pre-built structure or if they will need to build it themselves or via a contractor.

“We are very pleased that they donated the money. Now we are just waiting for a plan,” said Blakesley.
