CHESTER – On Aug. 5, 6 and 7, the Littleville Fair at 15 Kinnebrook Rd. in Chester, the first of the local agricultural fairs during the summer, will celebrate 100 years, and excitement is in the air.
Littleville Fair President Moe Boisseau, owner of Moose Meadow Brook Farm in Westfield, said a lot of exhibitors and vendors are signing up for the fair, which he said is 100 percent agricultural, so he knows it’s going to be a good one.
“I’m surprised at the number of people who have reached out,” he said.
On Saturday, there will be a parade to observe the fair’s 100th anniversary, which is scheduled to begin when the 11 a.m. ox teamsters challenge ends, so the oxen can be in the parade. Boisseau said Massachusetts Agriculture Commissioner John Lebeaux is expected to participate in the parade.
In preparation for the anniversary year, volunteers began working on the main buildings right after the fair ended last year. The front of the main exhibit hall was taken apart and rebuilt, new steps added, a new snack hut built in the front, and the snack areas redone down the side of the building.
Doors were also added to the craft barn which was built last year using a $25,000 grant from the Hampden County Improvement League, but the doors were delayed due to COVID-19 and finally arrived in February. The outdoor track for the antique tractor pull, among other events, has also been upgraded.
Admission to the fair is $8 for teens and adults, free for children under 12. The fair opens 4 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 5 with live music, a children’s petting zoo, a goulash dinner in the dining hall, and the first of many competitions. On Aug. 6, the hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the dining hall will serve barbecue chicken, and on Aug. 7, hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a turkey dinner will be served.
Throughout each day of the fair, there will be youth and adult animal and farm equipment competitions in the fields, craft and produce exhibits in the exhibit hall, and live music. In addition, there will be special competitions, such as a kids blueberry pie eating contest on Aug. 6 at 1 p.m.; a woman’s fry pan toss at 4 pm. On Aug. 6, and a beard competition on Aug. 7 at 3 p.m. Times are subject to change.
For younger children, there will be a 4-H petting zoo and pony rides all three days, with reptiles featured on Aug. 6 and 7. Other children’s events include Ed Popielarczyk’s magic show and balloon sculpting, puppet shows, and on Aug. 7, a touch-a-truck exhibit.
All three days, there will be a free bicycle raffle for kids under 12, with the bicycles donated by Dirats Laboratories in Westfield. A child must be present to win.
