HUNTINGTON — Tenth grader Kyleigh Benson, of Chester, competed in early education and care at the SkillsUSA Massachusetts State Conference in Marlborough on April 28. Benson was among approximately 1,000 technical education students from all over Massachusetts competing in 104 vocational contests.
The competition for students studying early education was six hours long and consisted of a written test, as well as planning, preparing and presenting a group lesson for preschool children in front of judges and spectators. In addition, a resumé and written lesson plan were required. Benson, who attends Gateway Regional High School, was recognized on stage as a state finalist in her subject.
Also at the SkillsUSA State Conference in Marlborough, Gateway’s early education vocational program instructor Kelly Bartolo accepted an award for starting an official chapter of SkillsUSA at Gateway. Joining Bartolo at the Chapter Recognition Banquet was Benson. Under Bartolo’s leadership, Gateway participated for the first time in the SkillsUSA regional competition in 2022.
