HUNTINGTON — On March 15, Gateway Regional High School participated for the first time in the SkillsUSA regional competition. SkillsUSA is an international partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It provides educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education in the nation’s classrooms.
Ari Marchese, Katrina Nakaya and Sierra Besancon, seniors in Gateway’s Chapter 74 early education and care program, took the SkillsUSA early childhood education district test, a written test consisting of 50 questions in early childhood content, 50 questions in employability and 25 questions in OSHA. Students from nine vocational schools in Western Massachusetts competed. Six thousand students from around the state have taken district tests in their trade areas this month.
Ari Marchese earned the top score and won a gold medal, securing her a spot in the state competition in Marlborough in April. States is the hands-on portion of the competition. Ari will show her skills as an early childhood educator, planning an age-appropriate curriculum and presenting it in front of a panel of judges and Chapter 74 early education and care instructors from across the state. She will also be required to submit a one-page resume.
“We would like to congratulate all three of our students for participating in the SkillsUSA contest and wish Ari the best of luck at the state competition,” said Kelly Bartolo, early education and care teacher.
The early education and care program at Gateway started three years ago under Bartolo, who has taught the vocational program for 11 years, formerly at Putnam Vocational Technical Academy in Springfield.
