HUNTINGTON – The Community Events Committee again this year invited residents to decorate their homes and post them on a map for everyone to enjoy the holiday lights.
People were invited to drive around town at their leisure beginning Dec. 15. Homes listed on a map were entered into a raffle for a gift certificate to a local business. The map is helpful for the town, where houses are more remote and farther apart.
The backyard winter wonderland of Dennis Stoops, for example, is visible through the trees on Worthington Road (Route 112), but requires a trip down to 13 Rocky Brook Drive to see up close and in full.
Stoops said he goes all out to decorate his house every year, even though he doesn’t get many onlookers on the quiet road. Both he and his dog welcomed the visit and photos.
Farther toward the center of town on Route 112 is 93 Worthington Road, high up a hill, adding splendor to its outdoor Christmas tree and lights.
The historic 1900 home at 8 E. Main St. features classic lights in its windows and garlands under its eaves, wrapping several deciduous trees to light up the street corner in town.
Maple Street had several homes lit, including No. 8, on the map, with a bright Nativity, and neighbors at Nos. 4 and 2, not on the map, with Santa and Rudolph and a friendly snowman, gingerbread man and Yoda, respectively.
The home at 1 Aldrich Ave. on the corner of Route 20, which may always be counted on for holiday decorations, featured all of the above plus the Abominable Snowman.
Holiday decorations always seem more fitting on the snow, and with more snow expected for Christmas, the lights in Huntington will continue to glisten.
